Andrew Garfield addresses rumors that La La Land is based on his relationship with ex Emma Stone
Andrew Garfield dismisses speculation that the 2016 film La La Land was inspired by his relationship with Emma Stone.
Andrew Garfield has responded to rumors that the 2016 Oscar-winning film La La Land—starring his ex-girlfriend Emma Stone—was inspired by their past relationship. In a recent Esquire profile published on Oct. 2, Garfield commented on the speculation, saying, “I have never, and I won’t ever, speak about or confirm or deny anything about my personal life with anyone, ever.” Garfield and Stone, who began dating after filming The Amazing Spider-Man in 2010, ended their relationship in 2015.
The rumor suggesting that the film’s love story between Mia (played by Stone) and Seb (Ryan Gosling) mirrored Garfield and Stone’s real-life romance emerged after La La Land became a hit. However, the film’s writer and director, Damien Chazelle, previously debunked the theory. “The movie is not based on anything,” Chazelle told The Hollywood Reporter in 2016. “There is something very poetic about a city that is built by people with these unrealistic dreams.”
Despite their split, Garfield and Stone have remained on good terms. In a 2022 interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Garfield shared a humorous story about Stone texting him to confirm if he was appearing in Spider-Man: No Way Home. He revealed that he kept the secret from her, jokingly recalling, “She was like, ‘You’re a jerk!’”
While Garfield is rumored to be dating Dr. Kate Tomas, Emma Stone married Dave McCary in 2020 and welcomed their daughter in 2021.
