Shannon Amos, daughter of actor John Amos, revealed on Oct. 1 that she learned of her father’s death through the media more than a month after he passed away. The actor, best known for his roles in Roots, Good Times, and Coming to America, died of natural causes on Aug. 21 in Los Angeles at the age of 84, according to a statement from his son, Kelly Christopher “K.C.” Amos.

K.C. shared the news on Oct. 1, writing, “It is with heartfelt sadness that I share with you that my father has transitioned... He was a man with the kindest heart and a heart of gold… and he was loved the world over.”

Hours later, Shannon, 58, posted on Instagram, expressing her shock at the delayed news. “We are devastated and left with many questions about how this happened 45 days ago, learning about it through the media like so many of you,” she wrote.

Shannon acknowledged the emotional difficulties her family is facing but noted, “There is some semblance of peace in knowing my father is finally free.” She added, “My family and I deeply appreciate the outpouring of love, calls, and texts. Please continue to hold our family in your thoughts and prayers.”

In his statement, K.C. also honored his father’s legacy, saying, “Many fans consider him their TV father… He was my dad, my best friend, and my hero.”
