Out singer Chappell Roan is facing criticism after stating that "both sides" of the upcoming election – represented by Vice President Kamala Harris and Donald Trump – "have problems." Roan explained her position in an interview with The Guardian, saying, "There are so many things that I would want to change… There’s problems on both sides." She added that she encourages people to "use your critical thinking skills" and vote in local elections.

George Takei, the out actor and LGBTQ+ advocate, responded to Roan’s remarks on social media, stating, “Both sidesing it when our community is under direct attack from the GOP is an irresponsible cop out.” He emphasized that high-profile LGBTQ+ figures should take a stand in the election.

Roan's comments ignited further online backlash. One Twitter user, Charlotte Clymer, criticized her stance, calling it "an excessively privileged position to take," while others expressed disappointment in Roan for appearing indifferent to the political challenges facing LGBTQ+ communities. Some, however, defended Roan, suggesting she was critical of specific policies rather than aligning with any particular side.

The debate underscores tensions within the LGBTQ+ community over the role of public figures in political discourse, particularly when discussing issues central to LGBTQ+ rights.
