Georgia prepares to celebrate former US President Jimmy Carter’s 100th birthday

Georgia is preparing to celebrate the 100th birthday of former US President Jimmy Carter, who will become the only US president to reach the centennial mark. Tributes have already started coming in, with President Joe Biden calling Carter “a moral force for our nation and the world” in a video statement aired on CBS. Jill Stuckey, superintendent of the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site, told AFP, “We are thrilled that the president from this little town is going to be the only president to ever live to be 100 years old."

Carter, who has been in hospice care for more than 19 months, will spend his birthday privately with family in the home he built with his late wife Rosalynn in Plains, Georgia. His last public appearance was during the Independence Day fireworks in July.

A military flyover with four Navy F-18s is planned as part of the celebration, fitting since Carter once served as a lieutenant in the Navy’s nuclear submarine program. The town will also hold a concert and a naturalization ceremony for 100 new US citizens.

Carter, remembered for his presidency from 1977 to 1981 and his post-presidential global humanitarian work, continues to be revered for his moral values and civic dedication.
