Deweaponisation starts in Kurram

Some factions have handed over their weapons to the administration or police, but tensions prevailed in the district.

Despite the announcement of a ceasefire among warring Shia and Sunni tribes in Kurram and the start of deweaponisation, the situation remains tense.

Roads remain closed to the Kurram tribal area, while Pak-Afghan trade along the border has been suspended. At the same time, schools remained closed despite the deputy commissioner's announcement of normalising security of the district.

Some factions have handed over their weapons to the administration or police, but tensions prevailed in the district.

According to locals, the main roads in and out of the district to Parachinar and Peshawar remained closed, while heavy police and security checks points were established along these routes to combat any untoward incident.

The private schools management chairman Muhammad Hayat Khan told media that institutions had remained closed since a week. Despite the temporary ceasefire, the district government still struggling to find a permanent solution alongside the district administration and tribal elders.
