Maya Rudolph returns to SNL as Kamala Harris in Season 50 premiere

“Saturday Night Live” kicked off its 50th season premiere, diving straight into the 2024 presidential race with a host of familiar political impressions. 

The cold open on Saturday night saw Maya Rudolph returning to her Emmy-winning role as Vice President Kamala Harris.

“Well your fun aunt has returned,” Rudolph quipped as she stepped onstage, embodying Harris with her signature comedic flair.

The episode also featured returning cast members Dana Carvey as President Joe Biden and Andy Samberg as Harris’ husband, Douglas Emhoff. 

James Austin Johnson reprised his role as former President Donald Trump, while Bowen Yang portrayed Ohio Senator JD Vance, Trump's running mate. The political ensemble was rounded out by “SNL” alum Jim Gaffigan, who portrayed Harris’ running mate, Tim Walz.

“I’ve got to be honest here folks. When Kamala Harris called and asked to be her vice president, I said, ‘Uh, yeah,’” Gaffigan said, adding, “This is personal for me. I love this country. And as a former teacher, I need the money. This suit is from Costco!”

The cameos quickly became a talking point on social media. Fans praised Rudolph's return, with one user on X (formerly Twitter) posting, “Maya Rudolph has gotten Kamala’s voice DOWN now. She deserves job security for the next four years.” Another user tweeted, “Maya Rudolph and Jim Gaffigan are perfect! #SNL doing Kamala Harris. She is too good!”

The host for the night was “Hacks” star Jean Smart, and musical guest Jelly Roll provided the entertainment.
