Funds sought for five new tehsil offices in metropolis

Assistant commissioners take charge without facilities

LAHORE:

The Lahore city has been divided into 10 tehsils without the required resources due to unavailability of offices and funds, causing problems for the assistant commissioners as well as the citizens.

The deputy commissioner of Lahore has sent a summary to the Punjab government for the funds.

According to officials, the population of the city has exceeded 12.5 million and its area is also increasing. With only one deputy commissioner and five tehsils in Lahore, the citizens had been facing difficulties regarding revenue and other matters.

Initially, there was a plan to divide Lahore into two parts, but now it has been divided into 10 tehsils. The five new tehsils area Nishtar, Wahga, Iqbal Town, Ravi and Saddar.

Before establishing the new tehsils, no steps were taken to set up their offices, provide vehicle or address the shortage of employees.

The Punjab government has appointed five new assistant commissioners who have taken the charge immediately.

However, they have neither offices nor subordinate staff or officers assigned to them.

The new assistant commissioners either sit in the deputy commissioner's office or work from the offices of the old assistant commissioners.

Vehicles that were previously used by the tehsildars and naib tehsildars have been given to the assistant commissioners, which has affected their field work.

Due to the situation, the new tehsils created by the Punjab government for public convenience have led to new difficulties.

Former deputy commissioner Rafia Haider had sent a summary to the government, requesting Rs200 million for the construction of the assistant commissioners' offices, but the funds have not yet been received.

Deputy Commissioner Syed Moosa Raza stated that a summary for Rs100 million had been sent to the Punjab government for vehicles and other facilities for the five new assistant commissioners.

He said offices, vehicles and other facilities would be provided for the assistant commissioners after the funds would be released.
