Android users warned to delete app mimicking Google Chrome

Experts have issued a warning to Android users about a malware-infected app that disguises itself as platforms like Google Chrome, engaging in fraudulent activities.

ThreatFabric, based in Amsterdam, have identified this new variant of the Octo Android malware, named Octo 2, which is now spreading across Europe.

The company had previously flagged the dangerous banking trojan, Octo, in April 2022. Since then, the malware has undergone significant modifications.

The mechanism of Octo 2 is much more advanced than its predecessor, making it harder to detect. Using this app, hackers can remotely lock and mute the device’s screen, launch apps, and send malware-infected messages to contacts.

This malware has a dangerous capability of infiltrating users’ SMS, which means hackers can intercept any codes received through text messages.
