Cloudburst drenches twin cities
Torrential rain battered the twin cities from Thursday night into the early hours of Friday morning, providing a welcome break from the oppressive heat but also creating a series of challenges for residents, particularly in low-lying areas. The heavy downpour caused rainwater drains to overflow, leading to widespread flooding, collapsed homes, and water accumulating on highways, resulting in significant traffic disruptions.
The rainfall, which began in parts of Rawalpindi earlier in the day and spread to Islamabad later, recorded over 1 million rupees in damages as it ravaged road infrastructure, houses, and commercial properties. Notably, Chaklala recorded 126mm of rain, Bokra 115mm, and various other locations experienced substantial rainfall, including Golra, Sector E-11 and Shamsabad.
The continuous rain led to severe flooding in several areas, particularly along major roads like Murree Road, Jhelum Road, and G Road. VVIP routes, including Mall Road and Rawal Road, were submerged under five feet of stagnant water. The Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) deployed teams to clear flooded areas, particularly the Committee Chowk underpass, while moderate flooding occurred near Nullah Leh and other drains.
Residents in low-lying areas faced inundated streets with water levels ranging from one to five feet, severely hindering their daily routines. Many were abruptly awakened as floodwaters surged into their homes, and vehicles parked on the streets were also affected. The flooded streets, contaminated with sewage, hampered transportation and many citizens reported difficulties even making it to morning prayers. Additionally, the electricity supply in various areas was disrupted.
Emergency preps
In response to the escalating situation, authorities are monitoring Nullah Leh to prevent further disasters. Water levels at Katarian and Gawalmandi rose to 10 and 11.5 feet, respectively, but began to decrease after the rain subsided around 8 a.m. Rescue 1122 and relief agencies have been placed on high alert in anticipation of additional rainfall later in the week. Rescue teams have been stationed in vulnerable areas to ensure public safety.
The relentless rain has particularly affected fragile structures, with reports of injuries from collapsing walls. One person was injured when a hotel wall collapsed near Mandi Mor, and two others sustained injuries from collapsing house walls. At least three houses have reportedly collapsed entirely, highlighting the urgent need for monitoring and rescue operations.
Rescue 1122 has issued an advisory urging citizens to exercise caution during the rain. Parents are advised to keep children away from Nullah Leh and downed electric poles.
