Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs is currently being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn, following charges of sex trafficking, racketeering, and prostitution. Combs, who has pleaded not guilty, joins a long list of high-profile detainees, including Sam Bankman-Fried and R. Kelly. MDC Brooklyn has faced widespread criticism for its harsh and dangerous conditions. In an August 2024 ruling, U.S. District Judge Gary J. Brown described the facility as plagued by “dangerous, barbaric conditions” and cited “uncontrolled violence” and “inadequate supervision.” He also mentioned incidents of inmates receiving no medical care after being assaulted, further fueling concerns about the facility’s management.

Public defender Andrew Dalack, who has represented clients held at MDC, described the conditions as “really scary,” attributing the issues to overcrowding, understaffing, and a lack of political will to address the problems. Dalack emphasized that MDC Brooklyn can “break people down” and strip them of their humanity. Congressman Dan Goldman has called for increased federal oversight to address “chronic understaffing, perpetual solitary confinement, and widespread violence.” The Federal Bureau of Prisons acknowledged the issues and has implemented an urgent action team to address them, while also working to hire more staff and handle maintenance requests.

MDC Brooklyn continues to hold individuals both convicted of crimes and those awaiting trial, with its troubling history casting a shadow over the facility’s current operations.
