Erik and Lyle Menendez’s family slam Ryan Murphy's 'Monsters' series
The extended family of Erik and Lyle Menendez has released a scathing statement criticizing Ryan Murphy's new Netflix series, "Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story." The family claims that the series is "a phobic, gross, anachronistic, serial episodic nightmare" that is "riddled with mistruths and outright falsehoods." They also accuse Murphy of ignoring the most recent exculpatory evidence in the case.
In the statement, the family says they are "virtually the entire extended family" of Erik and Lyle and that they "support them strongly." They also say they have been "victimized" by the series and that Murphy's claim to have spent years researching the case is a lie. The family says that Murphy relied on "debunked" Dominick Dunne, a pro-prosecution hack, to justify his slander against them.
The family also accuses Murphy of character assassination, saying that the series portrays Erik and Lyle as "repulsive" and "under the guise of a 'story telling narrative.'" They say they know Erik and Lyle "since they were boys" and that they "love them" and "want them home with us." They also say they are "close to them" and know what went on in their home, including "the unimaginably turbulent lives they have endured." Several members of the family were eyewitnesses to "many atrocities one should never have to bear witness to."
The family concludes by saying that it is "sad" that Murphy, Netflix, and all others involved in the series, do not have an understanding of the impact of "years of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse." They say that "perhaps, after all, Monsters is all about Ryan Murphy."
