Lady Gaga has released a video clip featuring her character Harley Quinn coming face-to-face with the Mona Lisa in the Louvre. The American singer and actress, who stars in the upcoming film Joker: Folie à Deux, drew a lipstick smile on the protective glass in front of the painting to promote the Louvre’s new exhibition Figures of the Fool, set to open next month. In the video, released on both Lady Gaga's and the museum's social media accounts, she creeps through the Paris museum at night, donning a red wig and singing a song composed specifically for the clip.
The Louvre assured the public that the video is "purely fictional" and stressed that an additional screen was placed in front of the bulletproof glass protecting Leonardo da Vinci's masterpiece. The lipstick smile is a nod to a scene in the upcoming Joker film, where Harley Quinn visits The Joker in jail. The museum further clarified that the clip was an homage to da Vinci, who was fascinated by the enigmatic smile of the Mona Lisa.
This isn't the first time the Louvre has been used by high-profile stars. In 2016, Will.i.am integrated himself into famous paintings for his Mona Lisa Smile video, while Beyoncé and Jay-Z filmed their Apeshit music video at the museum in 2018, featuring The Raft of the Medusa and The Coronation of Napoleon.
The Louvre collaborated with Warner Bros Pictures for Lady Gaga’s video, which was filmed at the iconic Paris museum.
