Newspapers must promote democracy and ethics, says President Zardari
On the occasion of National Newspaper Readership Day, President Zardari expressed his sincere congratulations to the All-Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS).
In his message, President Zardari urged newspapers to actively promote moral, ethical, and democratic values in society.
"I would like to urge newspapers to play their role in promoting moral, ethical, and democratic values in our society. They should educate the people about socio-economic issues and promote tolerance, inter-faith harmony, patriotism, civic responsibility, and respect for human rights."
In today's fast-paced digital age, where misinformation can spread rapidly, the President emphasised that newspapers' role has become even more critical.
"Newspapers must provide accurate and well-researched news to discourage fake news using modern Information Technology. Their role in promoting facts over sensationalism is essential to counter the spread of false information."
He underscored that a responsible press upholds the highest accuracy, fairness and balance standards in reporting news. He further said that responsible media provides a platform for marginalised voices to be heard and generates healthy discussion among the stakeholders on important issues.
On this day, President Zardari reaffirmed the importance of supporting a free and responsible press, stating, "A free and responsible press which is essential for the successful functioning of democracy as well as forming public opinion on issues of national and international significance."
