UK, Pakistan to join hands in specific sectors

Commerce minister, UK trade commissioner explore food sector, value-added exports

ISLAMABAD:

UK Trade Commissioner Oliver Christian met with Federal Minister for Commerce, Jam Kamal, to explore ways to enhance bilateral trade, according to a press statement released by the Ministry of Commerce on Monday.

The meeting focused on fostering sectoral collaboration and adopting a business-to-business matchmaking approach to unlock growth opportunities in both countries. Kamal emphasised Pakistan's significant potential in the food sector, particularly through value-added products. "Pakistan can significantly boost foreign exchange earnings by focusing on value addition," he remarked.

Kamal also highlighted the government's commitment to expanding trade under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, noting the ambitious goal of doubling Pakistan's exports from $30 billion to $60 billion. He praised the premier's dedication to this export growth plan. One of Pakistan's notable achievements, according to Kamal, was the success of the FoodAg Expo held in Karachi. The event, which hosted over 800 foreign delegates, opened doors to new business opportunities. "This was the first event of its kind with such a large international presence, offering significant business prospects," he stated.

The minister further noted Pakistan's growing exports in various sectors, including IT, mining, horticulture, and dairy. He also mentioned the country's emerging olive production, stating, "Pakistan is on its way to becoming a significant olive exporter, with extensive cultivation already underway." Both officials emphasised the importance of the upcoming UK-Pakistan Trade Dialogue, a new platform designed to promote trade and investment.
