KARACHI:

Pakistan Peoples Party Sindh President Nisar Ahmed Khuhro has said that the federal government had assured that no amendment would be made in the Indus River System Authority (IRSA) Act, therefore, GDA's protest was futile. Moreover, the establishment of the Constitutional Court will reduce the pressure of cases on the Supreme Court.

He expressed these views while talking to the media in the Sindh Assembly on Thursday. Information Secretary Aajiz Dhamrah was also present on the occasion.

Khuhro said that Sindh Assembly has passed a unanimous resolution against the amendment in the IRSA Act that has sent a clear message of Sindh to the Centre.

He said that water is a provincial issue and no change to the Act can be made without the consent and approval of the province.

Khuhro said that when the caretaker government appointed the IRSA chairman, the PPP and Sindh registered their protest to which the federal government had to withdraw its decision.

In response to a question about building canals to settle millions of acres of land of Punjab under Green Initiative Pakistan, Khuhro said that if canals are created to settle the lands of Punjab, then where the water will come from to these canals? Thats why there should be an explanation on this issue.
