Carly Gregg’s psychiatrist reveals she did not have severe mental issues before killing her mom

Psychiatrist Olivia Lieber took the stand as 15-year-old Gregg tried to stifle her giggles on day 4 of her trial.

Carly Gregg, a 15-year-old Mississippi girl, is on trial for allegedly murdering her mother and attempting to kill her stepfather in a March 19 incident. 

Gregg is accused of fatally shooting her mother inside their family home and later luring her stepfather back with a text from her mother’s phone. She faces charges of murder, attempted murder, and evidence tampering.

On the fourth day of the trial, Gregg was seen on the livestream giggling and trying to stifle her laughter while watching her defense attorney write a note. She appeared relaxed during the day’s proceedings, despite the gravity of the situation, which caught the attention of viewers.

As the trial progressed, psychiatrist Dr. Olivia Lieber testified that during her sessions with Gregg prior to the murder, Gregg denied hearing voices, experiencing hallucinations, or having suicidal thoughts, and appeared mentally oriented.

Gregg rejected a plea deal offering 40 years in prison, with her legal team pursuing an insanity defense. Licensed counselor Rebecca Kirk testified that Gregg had expressed interest in reading 'Crime and Punishment' before the shooting, a novel in which the main character "plans to murder a woman" and remains unremorseful. 

Kirk also described Gregg as "a highly gifted student" who sometimes felt isolated, adding, “Sometimes when you're so gifted, you might feel lonely.”
