Country music icon Dolly Parton has shared her thoughts on Beyoncé’s exclusion from the 2024 Country Music Association (CMA) Awards, despite the success of her hit country song "Texas Hold 'Em" from the album Cowboy Carter.
The album marked Beyoncé's first foray into country music, and "Texas Hold 'Em" made her the first Black woman to top the country charts. However, despite this historic achievement, Beyoncé received no CMA nominations.
Speaking to Variety, Parton explained that the lack of recognition wasn't due to any intentional "shutting out" but rather the abundance of "wonderful country artists" in the industry.
According to Parton, the CMA focused on those artists who have spent their careers dedicated to the genre. "I don’t think it was a matter of shutting out," Parton said, adding that Beyoncé’s album was "not just a specialty album."
Fans noted a contrast with Post Malone, whose debut country album F-1 Trillion garnered four CMA nominations. Addressing this, Parton remarked, "Post Malone has loved country music his whole life." Despite this, some fans viewed Parton’s comments as diplomatic.
Beyoncé paid tribute to Parton in her album, covering the classic "Jolene" and featuring an interlude called "Dolly P."
Parton expressed her appreciation, saying, "Beyoncé is giving that girl some trouble and she deserves it!"
