IT labs: Punjab govt to set up Knowledge City

Punjab govt plans to set up a ‘Knowledge City’ offering special computer facilities to schools.

LAHORE:

The Punjab government plans to set up a ‘Knowledge City’ near Dera Chahl offering special computer facilities to schools, said Punjab Education Foundation chairman Raja Anwar on Saturday.

Speaking at a debate contest at the PEF head office, Anwar said that a thousand computer labs would be set up in elementary schools. He said that the PEF endowment fund would pay for the schooling of 25,000 students this year.

He said that Rs1 billion had been set aside for stipends to schoolgirls in remote areas. He said that the government was keen to establish good schools all over Punjab, especially in far flung and less-developed areas.

The PEF was set up under the Punjab Education Foundation Act of 1991 to promote education for the poor under a public-private partnership framework. The foundation extends technical and financial assistance to selected private schools to encourage students from poor households to attend these schools.
