Kane breaks record with four goals in Bayern’s 9-2 Champions League win

Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane scored four goals in a 9-2 victory over Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday, setting a record for the most goals by a team in a Champions League match.

Kane opened the scoring with a 19th-minute penalty, surpassing Wayne Rooney's record of 30 goals to become the highest-scoring English player in European Cup history with 33 goals. His tally also marked his 50th, 51st, 52nd, and 53rd goals for Bayern in just 50 games.

Kane, who became the first player to score a hat-trick of penalties in a European Cup match, expressed his surprise at taking three penalties in one game but was delighted with his four-goal haul. France winger Michael Olise, on his Champions League debut, also scored twice for Bayern.

"It's the first time I've ever had three penalties in one game," said Kane. "It was a different feeling for me, but to score four goals is fantastic."

"To help the team in any way possible is important. Whether they're penalties or normal finishes I'll take them all. It was a great night for us."

Bayern’s nine goals made them the first team to reach that figure in a Champions League match. Despite conceding twice after halftime, Bayern regained control with Kane and Olise contributing further goals. Leroy Sane and Leon Goretzka added to the tally, while Jamal Musiala, Serge Gnabry, and Kane had goals disallowed for offside.

The match tied for the second-highest scoring game in Champions League history, level with Monaco’s 8-3 win over Deportivo La Coruna in 2003, while Borussia Dortmund’s 8-4 victory over Legia Warsaw in 2016 holds the record for most goals in a single match.

Additionally, Bayern’s Thomas Muller made his 152nd Champions League appearance, surpassing Barcelona legend Xavi for the most appearances for a single club in the competition.

Kane has now scored nine goals in five games for Bayern this season, including a hat-trick in a 6-1 Bundesliga win over Holstein Kiel at the weekend.
