KARACHI:

The Sindh Excise Department has introduced a new policy requiring mandatory biometric verification for vehicle registration and transfers. Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, who has the portfolios of Information, Transport, Excise and Taxation, and Narcotics Control, announced that biometric verification will now be necessary for both new and existing vehicles.

The new policy will be implemented in three phases.

In the first phase, starting from July 1, biometric verification will be required for the registration of new vehicles. In phase 2, starting from November 1, biometric verification will be mandatory for vehicle buyers.

And in the third and last phase, both vehicle sellers and buyers will be required to undergo biometric verification for transfers.

The senior minister said that this initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance transparency within the Sindh Excise Department and advance digitalisation in public services.

Biometric verification is a key step toward ensuring the integrity of vehicle transactions, protecting citizens from illegal transfers and fraud, he added.

Vehicle owners can complete the biometric verification process at any NADRA e-facilitation centre or district excise office.

The excise minister has been actively modernising the Sindh Excise and Taxation Department since assuming office, with previous measures including the facilitation of vehicle registrations at showrooms and the introduction of premium number plates, aimed at fundraising for flood victims.
