Elizabeth Debicki wins first Emmy for playing Princess Diana in ‘The Crown’

Debicki makes history as the first Australian actress to win Best Supporting Actress in a Drama.

Elizabeth Debicki secured her place in Emmy history at the 2024 awards, winning Best Supporting Actress in a Drama for her portrayal of Princess Diana in Netflix’s The Crown. 

This marks the first time an Australian actress has earned this particular accolade.

Upon accepting her award, Debicki joked, "I didn't write anything down because I'm very superstitious and now I'm in a real pickle, so I'm going to do this quickly." She continued by thanking Peter Morgan, the show’s creator, stating, "Thank you, Peter. Thank you for making this show. Thank you for trusting me with this." 

Debicki also expressed her appreciation for the cast and crew, adding, "Playing this part, based on this unparalleled, incredible human being has been my great privilege."

Debicki took on the role of Princess Diana in The Crown's fifth season, continuing into the final sixth season. 

Her portrayal spanned from 1997 to 2005, covering pivotal events such as Diana’s relationship with Dodi Fayed and the tragic car accident that claimed both their lives.

The 76th Emmy Awards were held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles and were co-hosted by Eugene Levy and Dan Levy, bringing the annual event to a worldwide audience.
