President Zardari approves 90-day sentence reduction for prisoners on Eid Milad-un-Nabi

The sentence reduction excludes prisoners convicted of serious offences like murder and terrorism.

President Asif Ali Zardari has approved a 90-day reduction in prison sentences on the occasion of Eid Milad-un-Nabi, based on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s advice.

This decision, made under Article 45 of the Constitution, does not apply to those convicted of serious crimes such as murder, espionage, anti-state activities, adultery, theft, robbery, kidnapping, and terrorism.

The sentence reduction also excludes offenders sentenced under the Foreigners Act, 1946, and the Narcotics Control (Amendment) Act, 2022.

Additionally, those convicted of financial crimes or causing harm to the national treasury are not eligible for the reduction.

However, male prisoners over 65 years old, women over 60, and minors under 18 who have served at least a third of their sentence will benefit from this reduction.

Across Pakistan, major cities such as Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, and Peshawar are illuminated with green and white decorations, as streets, markets, and public spaces are adorned in honour of the Holy Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him).

Government buildings and public spaces also display a festive spirit, while religious and cultural centers host special gatherings where scholars, Ulema, and Mashaikh share sermons on the Prophet's teachings and legacy.

This is not the first time President Zardari has granted such relief. Similar 90-day reductions were approved in the past on occasions such as Independence Day, Pakistan Day, and Eid ul Fitr.
