KARACHI:

Acting President of the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) Altaf A Ghaffar has appealed to Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah and Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab to take immediate action to improve the city's crumbling roads infrastructure.

The poor condition of the roads, he said, has become a major source of mental stress for city's residents, causing daily traffic jams in nearly every part of the metropolis.

The KCCI has received countless complaints regarding the city's roads network, particularly about the delays in road maintenance, which are further exacerbated during this year's monsoon rains., he said.

The deteriorating roads condition has caused frustration not only among the business community but also the general public, who face daily hardships. He pointed out that several roads have become almost impassable due to severe damage and overflow from sewerage lines.

"If you walk through South District, especially areas like Jodia Bazaar, Maripur, Keamari, Bolton Market, Lee Market, Tower, Lyari, MA Jinnah Road, and Aram Bagh, it resembles a war zone," Ghaffar said. He also highlighted the poor state of roads in other industrial and residential areas across the city.

Ghaffar warned that the ongoing neglect of Karachi's infrastructure is breeding resentment among residents, who feel punished despite paying higher taxes.

He questioned whether Karachi is receiving its fair share of revenue allocation, considering that the city contributes over 65% of the national revenue and 95% of Sindh's revenue.
