Illegal occupation: NGO moves SHC to have footpaths cleared
UHRC came before the Sindh High Court to move a constitutional petition for the removal of footpath encroachments.
KARACHI:
Karachi-based NGO, the United Human Rights Commission (UHRC), not to be confused with the HRCP, came before the Sindh High Court to move a constitutional petition for the removal of footpath encroachments.
They claimed that shop owners, carts and the police have collectively taken over the footpaths in Empress Market, causing traffic jams and other problems on the roads. The petitioner marked out Regal Intersection, Akbar Road, MA Jinnah Road, Shahra-e-Liaquat, Pakistan Chowk, Ranchore Lines, Abdullah Haroon Road, Zaibunnisa Road, New MA Jinnah Road, Nishtar Road, Patel Para, Super Market Liaquatabad, al Asif Square and Super Highway as problem areas.
The NGOs also called for contempt of court proceedings against illegal bus terminals that were to be removed on court orders but never were. The bench accepted the petition and set a hearing for September 28 and asked the chief secretary, local bodies minister, and police to appear.
