Late on Saturday and into early Sunday (PT), many Android users experienced widespread crashes of the Google app, which displayed a “Google keeps stopping” error. Google confirmed that the issue was resolved by 1:11 AM PT on Sunday.

The problem, which primarily affected users attempting to search through the app, saw it crash immediately upon opening. Older versions of the app were also impacted, and uninstalling updates through the App Info option did not resolve the issue, leading to further complications, as reported by 9to5Google.

Users attempting to open the Google app from their home screens encountered immediate crashes. The Google Search bar widget also failed to function, briefly displaying past search queries before crashing. The Pixel Launcher search bar showed results momentarily before shutting down, Google Discover could not launch, and the Voice Search microphone caused the app to fail. Each attempt resulted in the persistent “Google keeps stopping” error.

The issue affected both stable and beta versions of the Google Search app on devices running Android 15, 14, and earlier, impacting models like Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy. However, other Google services, such as Gemini, Google Assistant, Google Lens, and Circle to Search, continued to operate normally. Additionally, users could still access google.com through Chrome for Android, and platforms outside of Android remained unaffected.

By approximately 11:00 PM PT on Saturday, some users reported the app had started working again. Google acknowledged the “service disruption” at 11:07 PM PT and advised users to clear the app cache and data as a temporary fix. The company confirmed the problem had been fully resolved by 1:11 AM PT on Sunday.

Earlier Google search status dashboard mentioned:

"The issue with serving has been mitigated and our systems are becoming stable, but we're still working on a fix. Affected users still experiencing issues on the Google App on Android may try to clear the app cache and the app data through the Settings app. Next update will be within 12 hours." Later it said:

"We fixed the issue with serving. There will be no more updates."
