SC upholds police officer's termination

The Supreme Court has upheld the inquiry committee's decision of terminating a police sub-inspector from service for keeping a citizen in illegal detention.

A four-member bench headed by Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa heard a review petition filed by Punjab government against the reinstatement of Sub-Inspector Punjab Police Ghulam Murtaza Shah.

The counsel for Punjab Police told the court that the police officer had a charge of keeping a citizen in illegal detention and he had confessed to his crime in front of the inquiry committee. The inquiry committee had terminated him from service. However, the police cop moved the service tribunal which overturned the decision of the inquiry committee and reinstated him without citing any reason.

The Punjab government lawyer requested the SC to restore the inquiry committee's decision. After hearing arguments, the Supreme Court accepted the request of the Punjab government and restored the decision of the inquiry committee.
