Former US President Donald Trump has promised to eliminate taxes on overtime pay if he wins the 2024 election, aiming to provide relief for workers putting in more than 40 hours a week.

Speaking at a rally in Tucson, Arizona, on Thursday, Trump said the move would incentivise hard work and help businesses with hiring.

“The people who work overtime—police officers, nurses, factory workers—are the backbone of this country, and it's time Washington supports them,” Trump said during his first event following a debate with Vice President Kamala Harris.

Trump's plan is the latest in his tax-cut proposals, which also include eliminating taxes on tips, reducing the corporate tax rate to 15%, and extending the income tax cuts he enacted in 2017.

He did not outline how these cuts would be funded, despite the nation’s growing $35 trillion debt.

In response, the Harris campaign criticized Trump’s promise as a desperate attempt to win votes, with spokesperson Joseph Costello accusing Trump of prioritizing "billionaire buddies" over ordinary Americans.

Harris has outlined her own tax plans, including credits for first-time homebuyers and small businesses, while proposing tax increases for the wealthy and corporations.
