Britney Spears praises Sabrina Carpenter after VMAs performance: ‘She made me cool’

Britney Spears praised Sabrina Carpenter after her VMAs performance, calling her tribute "cool".

Britney Spears expressed her admiration for Sabrina Carpenter following Carpenter’s tribute to her during the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards. In an Instagram video posted on Thursday, Spears, 42, acknowledged the homage, saying, "I forget I'm famous sometimes because I'm a mom, I'm kind of old… but I thought it was kind of cool. She made me cool." Spears also praised Carpenter, saying, "I adore her. I love her to death."

Carpenter’s VMAs performance, which featured her hits "Espresso," "Taste," and "Please Please Please," included a nod to Spears' iconic 2000 song “Oops!... I Did It Again.” During the transition between "Please Please Please" and "Taste," a snippet from Spears' voiceover in the "Oops!" music video played, referencing the Heart of the Ocean diamond from Titanic. Carpenter performed alongside astronauts and an alien, with whom she shared a kiss, in a space-themed set.

Carpenter also took home her first Moon Person at the VMAs, winning the award for Song of the Year for "Espresso," which peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. In her acceptance speech, Carpenter thanked her fans, joking, "And thank you to that me espresso."

Spears noted that while she found Carpenter's alien dancer puzzling, she was overall impressed by the performance. Carpenter's tribute added to the influence of Spears, who remains a pop culture icon at the VMAs.
