4.7-magnitude earthquake hits north of Malibu

A 4.7-magnitude earthquake struck near Malibu early Thursday, felt as far south as Mexicali.

A 4.7-magnitude earthquake hit Thursday morning approximately 4 miles north of Malibu in Los Angeles County, according to initial information from the U.S. Geological Survey. 

The quake's initial magnitude of 5.1 was downgraded to 4.7.

The quake was centered about 3.1 miles southeast of Malibu and was felt as far south as Mexicali in Baja California.

It’s unclear whether the quake caused significant damage, though social media reports indicate that the tremor was felt throughout much of Southern California.

The earthquake occurred about 7 miles below the Earth's surface.
