A fire at an illegal petrol pump in Karachi’s Shah Faisal Colony was brought under control after it ravaged a residential building, resulting in the death of one person, rescue sources confirmed on Wednesday.

The fire, which erupted at the unauthorised petrol pump and an adjoining tyre shop, quickly spread to the building above, trapping residents. Rescue teams worked to evacuate people, though thick smoke hampered their efforts.

"The operation is challenging due to the smoke, but we are working to get everyone out safely," a rescue official said.

According to officials, the body of one victim was recovered, and over ten motorcycles parked outside the petrol pump were destroyed in the fire. Several nearby shops also suffered damage.

"All possible measures should be taken to protect lives and relocate residents to safety," Shah stated, requesting continuous updates on the situation.

He emphasised that the cause of the fire appeared to be the illegal petrol pump operating beneath the residential building, demanding that those responsible face legal action.

"We cannot allow anyone to endanger lives by running illegal petrol businesses," the chief minister said.

Shah also called for a crackdown on unauthorised petrol sales across Karachi. "Wherever such illegal operations are found, swift action will be taken. No one has the right to play with human lives," he added.
