InterBoard Karachi introduces new assessment model to pay teachers based on per-question evaluation

The move to per-question assessment payment will benefit teachers and improve exam quality, says board chairman.

Board of Karachi Intermediate Board has announced a significant change in the payment structure for exam assessment, with compensation for teachers to be based on a per-question rather than per-copy system, starting in 2025.

Chairman of the Karachi Intermediate Board, Zulfiqar Shah, revealed that this new system aligns with the introduction of E-marking and Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) technology, set to be implemented in the board's 2025 annual exams.

This decision was announced during an introductory seminar held at Adamjee Institute, where Shah addressed the media and explained the board's plans for upcoming changes.

Shah pointed out that the per-question payment model had already proven successful in Islamabad and is expected to attract more skilled teachers who had previously refrained from participating due to inadequate compensation.

He emphasised the need for educators to move away from formula-based marking, which he argued undermines talented students and leads to frustration with the exam system.

He further addressed the issue of inequality in exam preparation, noting the disparity between students at well-resourced colleges like Adamjee College and those at underfunded institutions such as in Lyari.

According to Shah, applying the same exam papers to students from vastly different educational backgrounds is unfair and contributes to broader educational inequalities.

The seminar also featured a speech by Roman Ijaz Malik, who has been working on exam reforms across educational boards in Sindh. The event was organised in collaboration with the Sindh Professors and Lecturers Association and the Sindh Secondary School Improvement Project.
