Huawei launches $2,800 Mate XT trifold phone hours after Apple reveals iPhone 16
Huawei Technologies Co. has unveiled the world’s first commercial device with two folds, positioning itself as a leader in mobile design right after Apple revealed its latest iPhones.
The trifold phone, named Mate XT, starts at 19,999 yuan ($2,800) and took over five years to develop. It can fit a 10-inch tablet in a pocket. Introduced during a livestream event from Shenzhen, the device aims to capture attention in China’s premium market, where Huawei has regained market share from Apple in the past year.
Following the launch of a breakthrough made-in-China mobile processor last August, Huawei returns with another innovation. However, there are doubts about how much of an impact the expensive new phone will have on the market. While most phone makers focus on AI features, Huawei’s emphasis on hardware design sets it apart.
IDC analyst Arthur Guo noted that trifold phones face challenges in becoming a major growth driver due to technical complexities, high prices, and limited competition. Many phone makers are slowing down investments in foldables, waiting for Apple to potentially attract more consumers to the category.
For Huawei, the value might extend beyond sales. The company has become a symbol of national pride for developing homegrown chips despite US sanctions, fueling strong sales over the past year.
The Mate XT, measuring just 3.6mm thick when open, offers three modes: a regular smartphone, a nearly square foldable, and a full 10.2-inch tablet. It runs on Huawei's Harmony OS.
Huawei’s decision to launch the Mate XT right after Apple’s iPhone 16 introduction signals its ambition to claim the innovation spotlight, especially in China.
