Selena Gomez on her first Spanish-speaking role: 'Emilia Pérez' holds special meaning

Selena Gomez's latest film, "Emilia Pérez," holds a special place in her heart. During a Q&A session at the Toronto Film Festival, Gomez revealed how her first Spanish-speaking role allowed her to connect with her Latin American heritage and bring a character to life that deeply resonated with her.

Gomez plays Jessi Del Monte, the wife of a drug cartel leader attempting to fake her own death. While she admitted to being nervous about acting in Spanish for the first time, Gomez expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent her cultural identity on screen.   

The film, directed by Jacques Audiard and also starring Zoe Saldaña, received a standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival, leaving Gomez in tears.

Gomez's passion for the project was evident in an earlier Instagram video where she shared the emotional moment of learning she landed the role. She has also spoken about the film's empowering portrayal of Latinx communities.   

"Emilia Pérez" hits select theaters on November 1st and will be available for streaming on Netflix on November 13th.
