Tyreek Hill mimics police handcuffing after detainment in Dolphins’ season opener celebration
Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill performed a unique touchdown celebration on Sept. 8, 2024, just hours after being briefly detained by Miami-Dade police. During the Dolphins’ season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Hill caught an 80-yard touchdown pass and pretended to be handcuffed in the end zone, with teammate Jaylen Waddle mimicking a police officer cuffing him. The celebration was a nod to Hill's earlier detainment that same morning.
Videos surfaced on social media showing Hill lying face-down on the ground in handcuffs, surrounded by four officers after a traffic stop near the Dolphins' Hard Rock Stadium. Despite the incident, Hill was released in time to play in the game, which Miami won 20-17.
Hill’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, expressed concern about the incident, telling ESPN, "How things escalated into the situation that they were in, in handcuffs and being held on the ground with police, is mind-boggling to me. I’m deeply concerned by that." Rosenhaus added that Hill was “very distraught” mentally but physically unharmed.
Miami-Dade Police Department Director Stephanie V. Daniels announced an internal investigation into the matter and placed one of the officers on administrative duties during the review. Daniels emphasized a commitment to "transparency and accountability" and is reviewing body camera footage related to the stop.
