Director Matt Reeves has provided a significant update on the filming of The Batman 2.

Regarding the highly anticipated follow-up to the 2022 DC film starring Robert Pattinson, Reeves shared that “the plan is to shoot next year” and they are “finishing up the script now.”

Reeves also confirmed that “Colin [Farrell] will be part of the movie,” revealing to SFX Magazine (via Deadline) that the Penguin actor is involved. He mentioned, “We’ve shared [the script] as we’ve been going along with DC and the studio and they’re super excited.”

He hinted that the forthcoming Penguin TV series will serve as an “entry point” for the next film and is “absolutely connected to where we leave things in the series.”

“There are details that actually connect right into the way the next movie begins, and the way that Oz enters that world as we hand the baton back to Batman, and Batman is on another case,” he elaborated.

Reeves also expressed a wish for “these stories to be a meditation on the way Gotham is the way it is,” adding, “It’s such a brutal place and we’re digging for the answers as to why these people’s lives are this way.”

He explained that The Batman 2 will “dig into the epic story about deeper corruption, and it goes into places that he couldn’t anticipate in the first one.”

“The seeds of where this goes are all in the first movie, and it expands in a way that will show you aspects of the character you never got to see. Batman is constantly battling these forces. But those forces can’t be entirely exorcised. So the next movie delves deeper into that.”

This update follows comments from star Andy Serkis, who mentioned in June that production on the sequel is expected to begin in 2025, suggesting that the release might not happen before mid-2026.

"Basically, I know nothing about the movie other than that I've just found out that we're probably likely to be starting filming early next year," he said (via Popverse). "Therefore, if you do the math, it'll be a year and a half after that."
