Nicole Kidman’s 'The Perfect Couple' on Netflix: A glimpse into the dark side of the rich
Nicole Kidman's latest mini-series, The Perfect Couple, has landed on Netflix, bringing viewers to the opulent shores of Nantucket for a high-society murder mystery. Set in the sprawling estate of the Winbury family, the series unfolds on the eve of their son Benji’s wedding to Amelia. However, the celebration takes a dark turn when a body is discovered floating in the water, halting the festivities and making everyone a suspect.
The show, helmed by Susanne Bier, features a cast brimming with drama, including Kidman as the icy matriarch Greer and Liev Schreiber as her reluctant husband Tag. The dead body is revealed to be Merritt Monaco, Amelia’s Maid of Honour and a low-level Instagram influencer. Merritt’s unexpected demise, caused by an overdose of barbiturates, is tangled with secrets: she was having an affair with Tag and was pregnant with his child.
As the investigation unfolds, several family members emerge as suspects. Greer, who manages her husband's indiscretions, and Tag, whose affair has now come to light, are both under scrutiny. Benji and Amelia, already fraught with tension, also find themselves in the spotlight. Meanwhile, best man Shooter’s suspicious behavior and the complicated dynamics of the Winbury siblings add layers to the intrigue.
The climax of the series reveals Abby, Tom's wife, as the true culprit. Driven by her desire to secure the family’s fortune and her own future, Abby poisoned Merritt and drowned her to prevent any claims on the Winbury’s trust fund. This revelation, while anticipated, underscores the series' critique of the lengths the wealthy will go to protect their status and wealth.
In the end, The Perfect Couple delivers its murder mystery with a predictable twist but excels in showcasing Kidman’s talent and the glamorous yet morally bankrupt world of the super-rich.
