Marlon Wayans reflects on Harvey Weinstein’s downfall and ‘Scary Movie’ fallout
Actor and comedian Marlon Wayans recently opened up about his troubled history with Harvey Weinstein during an interview on Club Shay Shay. Wayans revealed that he felt Weinstein had "stolen" his family’s ideas for the Scary Movie franchise, which began in 2000. Initially produced by Weinstein’s company, Miramax, the film was created by the Wayans brothers, with Marlon, Shawn, and Keenan at the helm. However, their relationship with the company soured after a poor deal for the first installment and the hiring of new directors without their knowledge for subsequent sequels.
Reflecting on Weinstein’s legal troubles, Wayans described the producer’s downfall following numerous rape and sexual assault convictions as “God’s revenge.” He added, “Sometimes you ain’t gotta do nothing because God’s gonna do it all... vengeance is mine.” The actor explained that the family ultimately moved on, creating other successful films like White Chicks and Little Man, but admitted he regretted not suing Weinstein for taking their ideas.
Wayans emphasized the uniqueness of his family’s contributions, stating, “You can’t do Wayans shit without the Wayans.” Weinstein’s eventual conviction in 2020, which played a pivotal role in the #MeToo movement, led Wayans to reflect on the justice he believes was served.
