'IRSA Act tweaks to exacerbate water shortage'

Ex-PPP Senator calls for public debate on Indus River water distribution

KARACHI:

In a scathing critique, former PPP senator Sassui Palijo has vehemently condemned the proposed amendments to the IRSA Act 2024, warning that the law tweaks will exacerbate the already contentious water distribution issues in Sindh.

Speaking to media personnel in Karachi, Palijo alleged that the amendments would grant sweeping powers to the prime minister, enabling the appointment of an arbitrary person as the chairman of Indus River System Authority (IRSA).

This move is utterly unacceptable to the people of Sindh and will perpetuate further injustices and conspiracy regarding water distribution, leading to devastating consequences for the province.

Palijo emphasised that Sindh is already suffering due to the non-implementation of the 1991 water agreement, resulting in inadequate water supply to the province. The proposed amendments will only serve to further marginalize Sindh, compromising its rights to water and financial resources.

She urged the representatives of Sindh to take a strong stand against the legislation, warning that the people of Sindh will not tolerate any further injustices and will fight to protect their rights.
