Selena Gomez recently opened up about her distinctive singing experience in the upcoming movie Emilia Perez during a Q&A session at the Telluride Film Festival on Sunday, September 1.

The 32-year-old actress and singer revealed that her vocal performance in the film was not only challenging but also "therapeutic."

In discussing her approach to singing for her character Jessi Del Monte’s song, “Mi Camino,” Gomez explained that the track underwent significant changes. Initially, the song had "a bit more of a rough sound to it," she shared.

However, after collaborating closely with singer-songwriter Camille, the piece transformed "almost like a ballad." Gomez emphasized that the song evolved into a beautiful narrative about a woman’s journey through various life stages.

Gomez reflected on the hours she spent in the studio, expressing how the experience was both enjoyable and demanding. She highlighted the importance of not relying on her usual singing style, instead focusing on the character's limitations.

“I had to try and, you know, in my mind to think, ‘Okay, this is what were the limits I could reach within my character,’” she noted. The process, she said, was "really therapeutic," allowing her to connect deeply with her character's true essence.

These insights come shortly after Netflix released the first trailer for the Spanish-language French film on August 26. Emilia Perez features Karla Sofia Gascón as a cartel leader trying to fake her own death.

The film, also starring Zoe Saldaña, Adriana Paz, and Edgar Ramírez, explores the journeys of four women in Mexico, each striving for their own form of happiness.

Emilia Perez is set to hit select theaters on November 1, followed by a Netflix release on November 13.
