NEW YORK:

Emma Navarro defeated defending champion Coco Gauff 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to advance to the US Open quarter-finals on Sunday, marking her second victory over Gauff in a Grand Slam this year.

Gauff had hoped to redeem herself after losing to Navarro in the fourth round at Wimbledon, but the 13th-seeded Navarro delivered a confident performance, impressing the Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd with her well-rounded game.

Gauff, the 20-year-old third seed, struggled throughout the match, particularly with her serve, committing 19 double faults and 60 unforced errors.

Navarro's win secured her a place in her second Grand Slam quarter-final, where she will face Spain's 26th seed, Paula Badosa. Gauff's defeat means she will fall out of the top five in the world rankings.
