Johnny Gaudreau, a forward for the Columbus Blue Jackets, tragically passed away Thursday night in a biking accident in Oldmans Township, New Jersey, alongside his brother Matthew. The Gaudreau brothers were biking near their hometown of Salem in Salem County when the incident occurred. The Blue Jackets confirmed their deaths in a statement released by the team.

Gaudreau, 31, was a key player for the Blue Jackets, having signed as an unrestricted free agent from the Calgary Flames in July 2022. He had been preparing for a rebound season after two challenging years with Columbus. Gaudreau had recently played for the United States at the men's world championships in Czechia, where he recorded three goals, eight assists, and 11 points in eight games.

The tragedy marks another heartbreaking event for the Blue Jackets, following the death of goalie Matiss Kivlenieks in a fireworks incident in July 2021. Gaudreau, who was set to be a groomsman in his sister Katie’s wedding on Friday, leaves behind his wife, Meredith, and their two young children, Noa and Johnny.

Gaudreau’s decision to join the Blue Jackets was driven by his desire to raise his family closer to home. Despite criticism over his move from Calgary, he remained committed to Columbus and aimed to bring success to the team. His loss leaves a significant void in the Blue Jackets' lineup as they head into the new season.
