Winona Ryder recently expressed her frustration with younger co-stars who show little interest in movies, noting that social media has significantly shifted priorities in the industry. During interviews promoting her role in the upcoming Tim Burton sequel, "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice," Ryder revealed her concerns to Esquire, stating, "The first thing they say is, ‘How long is it?’” She lamented that many younger actors lack curiosity about film history, something she considers essential to the craft.
Ryder, who has transitioned from being the youngest on set to the oldest, shared her mixed feelings about working with younger generations. While she enjoys interacting with young, enthusiastic film lovers like her "Stranger Things" co-star Finn Wolfhard, who is passionate about classic actors like Elliott Gould, she finds it disheartening when others are indifferent to the rich history of cinema.
Reflecting on her own experiences, Ryder acknowledged that her comments might make her sound out of touch, but she emphasized the importance of younger generations studying the history of film and photography. She expressed hope that they would come to appreciate the depth and richness of the medium.
Although she didn’t name specific co-stars, Ryder’s comments come in the wake of an interview with "Stranger Things" actor Millie Bobby Brown, who admitted she rarely watches movies due to a lack of interest.
Ryder will soon be seen in "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice," set to release in theaters on September 6, 2024.
