Blake Lively's brother-in-law, Bart Johnson, has stepped forward to defend the actress amid ongoing criticism surrounding her latest film, It Ends With Us.
Johnson, known for his role as Coach Bolton in High School Musical, is married to Blake’s older sister, Robyn Lively. He responded to a critical comment on Instagram regarding the film, which has sparked debate over its portrayal of sensitive topics like domestic violence.
In a now-deleted response to a comment accusing Lively of promoting "happiness in a domestic violence setting" without considering victims, Johnson replied, "I’m really sorry you feel that way. I’m sure you have a huge heart and want the best. I can promise you the truth has not come out yet. Blake worked harder on this film than anything I’ve seen her do my entire life. Because it meant so much to her."

Johnson further emphasised that the true message of the story is found in both the book and the movie, not in isolated clips or interviews.
He added, "She is the reason the message / this movie / is getting out. Were mistakes made? Yes. I make mistakes in life. But they aren’t under a microscope. Anyway, I respect your views. I got nothing but love for you."
Lively, who played Lily Bloom in the film adaptation of Colleen Hoover's 2016 novel, also served as a producer on the project. However, since its release on August 9, the actress has faced social media criticism for not being more vocal about the film's exploration of domestic abuse and toxic relationships.
Despite sharing resources for domestic violence survivors on her social media, some fans feel she hasn't done enough to raise awareness. Lively also faced backlash for promoting her haircare brand, Blake Brown, during the film’s press campaign.
Various reports have also surfaced, suggesting a strained relationship between Lively and the film's director, Justin Baldoni, who also portrayed Ryle.
Sources claim that tensions between the two date back to at least a year, with Lively allegedly reluctant to return to filming after the production was paused due to the actors' strike in 2023.
Additionally, there were reports of disagreements during post-production, leading to two competing cuts of the film, one of which was reportedly commissioned by Lively and is currently being shown in theaters.
In his Instagram post, Johnson shared several photos with Lively, reflecting on their 30-year friendship and praising her dedication and kindness.
"For 30 years I’ve had the privilege of being fiends [sic] with this kind, loving, committed, hard-working and inspiring strong women [sic]!!" he wrote, expressing his admiration for Lively's commitment to making the world a better place and being a role model. "When I grow up I wanna be just like her. I’ve got a long ways to go. LOVE YOU BLAKE!!!"
