Al-Ittihad post stunning victory against Al-Taawoun in Saudi Pro League

Benzema equalises, Aouar nets 98th-minute penalty to maintain Al-Ittihad’s unbeaten record

Al-Ittihad staged a dramatic comeback to secure a victory over Al-Taawoun on Thursday, thanks to goals from Karim Benzema and Houssem Aouar. Al-Taawoun took the lead when Barrow unleashed a powerful shot from over 30 meters, leaving goalkeeper Rajkovic helpless.

Benzema equalised just ten minutes later with a skillful backheel finish, and in the 98th minute, Aouar converted a penalty to give Al-Ittihad the win in Saudi Professional League round match.

The first half was largely uneventful, with both teams struggling to create clear opportunities. Al-Taawoun applied pressure early on, keeping Al-Ittihad's defence on alert. Al-Ittihad had trouble advancing the ball, with some slow play forcing them to rely on long clearances. The only notable moment came when Al-Saluli mishandled a pass from Fabinho, allowing Diaby to steal the ball and almost score for Al-Taawoun.

The second half was a complete contrast, with both teams playing more aggressively. Benzema had a goal disallowed for offside after a well-placed left-footed strike. Al-Taawoun's breakthrough came when Barrow's long-range effort rocketed into the top corner, putting Al-Ittihad under pressure.

Al-Ittihad responded swiftly with a well-orchestrated team play that led to Benzema's equaliser. After that, Laurent Blanc's side gained momentum, with Aouar and Diaby linking up to create dangerous chances. In the 98th minute, Diaby was fouled in the box by Al-Saluli, who was subsequently shown a red card. With Benzema unable to take the penalty due to injury, Aouar stepped up and calmly slotted home the decisive goal.
