Susan Smith’s ex-husband opposes her parole

Susan Smith, imprisoned for drowning her sons in 1994, faces parole hearing as her ex-husband opposes release.

Susan Smith, who has been in prison for the 1994 murder of her two young sons, is scheduled for a parole hearing on November 4th.

However, her former husband, David Smith, is determined to ensure she remains behind bars. Despite Susan reaching out to David, asking him not to oppose her release, a family member told The Post that David is resolute in his decision to oppose her parole. "He has every right to stand in her way, and that’s exactly what he’s about to do," said the relative, emphasizing the pain and heartbreak Susan caused by murdering their children.

Susan Smith has been incarcerated at Leath Correctional Institution in Greenwood, South Carolina, for over two decades after driving her sons, 3-year-old Michael and 14-month-old Alexander, into a lake where they drowned.

Initially, she falsely claimed that a black man had carjacked her and kidnapped the boys, leading to a widespread manhunt. Nine days later, she confessed to fabricating the story and intentionally drowning her sons because she was involved with a wealthy man who didn't want children.

Susan was convicted of murder but was spared the death penalty, receiving a life sentence with the possibility of parole after 30 years. As her parole hearing approaches, the parole board will consider David Smith's strong opposition to her release.
