Mariah Carey's mother Patricia and sister Alison died on the same day over the weekend. The singer, 55, shared a statement with PEOPLE about the tragic loss.

"My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day," Mariah said.

Mariah's relationship with her mother was complicated throughout her life. Patricia was a Juilliard-trained opera singer and vocal coach. Mariah inherited her vocal talents from her mother.

Mariah and Patricia had their ups and downs, but they maintained a relationship. They even performed together in a festive mother-daughter duet on ABC's Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You special in 2010.

Mariah also dedicated her memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, to her mother. "And to Pat, my mother, who, through it all, I do believe actually did the best she could," she wrote. "I will love you the best I can, always."

Mariah's relationship with her sister Alison was also complex. Mariah wrote in her memoir that it was emotionally and physically safer for her not to have any contact with her or her brother Morgan.

No other details about Patricia and Alison's causes of death are known at this time. Mariah asked for privacy during this difficult time.
