KARACHI:

The metropolitan city is in disarray after the light to moderate monsoon rains, while further downpours are expected according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).

Even the light rains have exacerbated the city's dire condition, which have caused significant transportation issues and disruptions to daily life of the citizens.

The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and the administrations of 25 towns have yet to implement effective measures to address the situation.

The city is already struggling with extensive potholes and deteriorated roads, whereas its streets are largely impassable, which has led to severe traffic congestion.

Recent repair and reconstruction efforts on key roads, including University Road, Shahrah-e-Pakistan, New MA Jinnah Road, Korangi Expressway, and Korangi Road, are ineffective, leaving these vital routes in a state of disrepair.

This dire situation is compounded by an inadequate sewage system in many neighbourhoods of Karachi, with sewage water accumulating in potholes and damaged roads.

As additional rain is expected, conditions are likely to worsen, further straining the city's infrastructure.

The KMC is tasked with maintaining major roads, while town administrations are responsible for inner streets. However, there has been a noticeable lack of action from municipal authorities, leading to prolonged delays for commuters and ongoing hardship for residents. Despite the aforementioned challenges, taxes continue to be levied on the citizens without corresponding improvements in public services or infrastructure.
