Fleetwood Mac’s Stevie Nicks shares ‘biggest regret’ of career: Not sharing a stage with Peter Green

Even as a double Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Stevie Nicks, the iconic Fleetwood Mac lead singer, remains surprisingly relatable.

Despite her celestial voice and larger-than-life persona, Nicks has faced the same human flaws and missteps as anyone else. Her well-publicized struggles with cocaine and her tumultuous relationships, especially within Fleetwood Mac, are well known. However, one of Nicks' most poignant regrets revolves around a more wholesome aspect of the band’s past.

Nicks expressed her regret after the passing of Peter Green, Fleetwood Mac’s founding member and a remarkable guitarist. Although Fleetwood Mac became famous for their sunlit rock of the '70s, they initially thrived on R&B with Green at the forefront. Despite his significant contributions and influence, Green preferred to avoid the spotlight, secure in his musical legacy.

Nicks shared her remorse in a tribute to Green, stating, “I am sorry to hear about the passing of Peter Green. My biggest regret is that I never got to share the stage with him. I always hoped in my heart of hearts that that would happen. When I first listened to all the Fleetwood Mac records, I was very taken with his guitar playing. It was one of the reasons I was excited to join the band.”

Mick Fleetwood, who also played alongside Green, offered his condolences, emphasizing Green’s monumental impact: “For me, and every past and present member of Fleetwood Mac, losing Peter Green is monumental.”

“No-one has ever stepped into the ranks of Fleetwood Mac without a reverence for Peter Green and his talent, and to the fact that music should shine bright and always be delivered with uncompromising passion.”

Fleetwood said. “Peter, I will miss you, but rest easy your music lives on. I thank you for asking me to be your drummer all those years ago. We did good, and trail blazed one hell of a musical road for so many to enjoy. God speed to you, my dearest friend.”

Peter Green’s legacy remains profound, marked by his emotional guitar work, pioneering role in British blues, and lasting influence on Fleetwood Mac. Despite personal challenges, Green's music continues to inspire and celebrate the enduring impact of a true musical innovator.
