Monsoon update: PMD forecasts scattered rain in Karachi

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted scattered drizzle and rain in Karachi on Monday evening or night, as the city remains under the influence of the ongoing monsoon season.

The Met Office reported that Karachi’s weather is expected to stay hot and humid over the next 24 hours, with temperatures ranging between 34°C and 36°C.

Humidity levels have reached 78%, while winds are blowing at 14 kilometres per hour. The minimum temperature recorded was 28.5°C.

This forecast follows earlier predictions of light to heavy showers in Karachi from Tuesday to Thursday, raising concerns about potential urban flooding.

In anticipation of the heavy downpours, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab has declared a rain emergency.

The PMD had previously warned that a new rain system, originating from West Bengal, is likely to move westward, bringing strong monsoon currents to southern Pakistan between August 26 and 29.

Areas in Sindh expected to receive rain include Karachi, Hyderabad, Dadu, Thatta, Badin, Sajawal, Shaheed Benazirabad, Jamshoro, Tando Allayar, Tando Muhammad Khan, Tharparkar, Nagarparkar, Mithi, Mirpur Khas, Umarkot, Matiari, Sanghar, Sukkur, Ghotki, Shikarpur, Kashmore, Khairpur, Larkana, Jacobabad, and Naushero Feroze.

The Meteorological Department issued an advisory predicting significant rainfall across various regions of Pakistan from August 26 to 29 as a monsoon rain-bearing system is set to re-enter the country.

In Lahore and other parts of Punjab, the system is expected to bring rain, with the maximum temperature in Lahore likely to hover around 35 degrees Celsius.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) issued an alert in anticipation of the rains, although the monsoon system currently remains weak in Punjab.
