RAWALPINDI:

The administrations of the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi have adopted stringent security measures, similar to the ones implemented during Ashura, for the mourning processions scheduled today in commemoration of the Chehlum of Karbala martyrs.

The Rawalpindi district administration has approved a comprehensive security plan in which around 3,000 security personnel, including mounted police units and Rangers, will be deployed, with an army unit on red alert. Additionally, 350 closed-circuit cameras have been installed along the routes, with a formal control room established to monitor the processions. Mobile phone and internet services will be suspended from 9am to 12 midnight on the day of the processions.

The plan includes a prohibition on the entry and parking of motor vehicles, the placement of building materials, and standing on rooftops, windows, and balconies along the procession routes. The carrying of weapons, matchsticks, and lighters will also be forbidden. Police officers will be stationed on all rooftops along the routes.

Capital deploys 3,500 cops

On the other hand, about 3,500 officers and personnel from the police and other law enforcement agencies, including 500 traffic police officers, were on security duties in Islamabad on Sunday.

Strict checking was implemented at all entry and exit points of the city, and processions were monitored through Safe City cameras. Armed police officers were stationed on rooftops of houses and commercial plazas, and armoured police vehicles were on standby for emergencies. The district administration closely monitored scholars who had been banned from entering Islamabad. All major and minor roads and streets along the procession route were blocked with barbed wire.
